米MetaのCEO（最高経営責任者）であるマーク・ザッカーバーグ氏が、社内タウンホール（全社集会）において、AIエージェント（自律的にタスクを実行するAIシステム）の開発ペースが想定していたほど加速していないことを認めた。ロイター通信などの海外メディアが報じた。同社は今年、AIインフラに対して1,450億ドルに及ぶ巨額の投資を行っているが、これまでのところ期待通りの進捗が得られていない現状が明らかとなった。
1. AIエージェント開発進捗の鈍化とレイオフの影響
ザッカーバーグ氏は流출した録音データの中で、「少なくとも過去4ヶ月間におけるエージェント開発の軌道は、我々が期待していたようには加速しなかった」と言及した。Metaは開発体制の強化に向けて何千人もの人員整理（レイオフ）を断行し、組織の再編を進めてきたが、ザッカーバーグ氏は「再編のタイミングが甘く、解雇もスマートに行えなかった」とし、再編計画がまだ成果を結んでいないことを認めている。
2. 社内ツールにおける競合モデルの利用と混乱
さらにMetaの内部では、自社ツールの開発において競合他社のAIモデルに過度に依存しているほか、従業員の活動データをAI学習用に追跡するプログラム（従業員監視プログラム）を巡る問題も発生している。このプログラムは従業員のPC操作を全て記録するものだったが、機密情報が内部で漏洩したため、一時停止に追い込まれた。タウンホールでは、CTO（最高技術責任者）のアンドリュー・ボズワース氏が、同プログラムを再開する場合は希望者のみの「オプトイン方式」にすると表明し、社内の混乱の収拾に追われた。
（編集部注：Metaは莫大な資金を投じてAI開発をリードしようとしているが、人員整理に伴う開発現場の士気低下や技術的ボトルネックにより、ザッカーバーグ氏が描いていた「人々の代わりに活動するAIエージェント」の実現には時間がかかっているとみられる。）しかし、ザッカーバーグ氏は今後3〜6ヶ月の間にAI投資の大きなメリットが現れると楽観視しており、当面は投資の効果がどのように結実するかが市場の注目点となる。

Meta blamed AI for 8,000 layoffs, its CEO just admitted the AI isn't there yet
Meta raised its AI capex to as much as $145 billion, cut 8,000 jobs, and framed the move around AI-driven efficiency. In July, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told staff the agentic AI progress behind that bet "hasn't really accelerated" the way the company expected. Compare that to Intuit, which cut 17% of its own workforce the same week and had its CEO flatly deny AI had anything to do with it — and the 2026 layoff wave looks less like proof agents are production-ready, and more like cost discipline wearing an AI label.
